Not to be outdone by nutrition month, the crafts want their place. Today I got all kinds of new scrapbook stuff in the mail and I can't wait to use it! I'm working on the summertime scrapbook and then will move on to the September-December book. Then I've got some other projects in the works.
Some samples from the "summertime" scrapbook (this is page one):
On the sewing front, Music Man has been going well. We've finished off Marian Paroo and are starting up on the others! I can't wait to see everything on stage. More pictures soon...
To kick off our nutrition theme today, let's begin with the idea of nutrition vs. weight loss. We might as well put a disclaimer here - I'm not a nutritionist in any way, but I read a lot of articles and have a lot of ideas that have been gathered. Obviously, good nutrition is important to losing weight, but it's important even after you've lost weight and even if you don't need to lose any at all. So I think people should stop thinking about it for weight loss and just think about it for general health (then weight loss will just be an added bonus, if you need to lose any!).
Some tips (from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website):
Why is healthy eating important? When combined with exercise, a healthy diet can help you lose weight, lower your cholesterol level and improve the way your body functions on a daily basis.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Guide Pyramid divides food into 6 basic food groups, consisting of 1) grains, 2) fruits, 3) vegetables, 4) meats and beans, 5) dairy and 6) fats.
The USDA recommends that an adult daily diet include the following: 3 ounces of whole grains, and 6 ounces of grains total 2 cups of fruit 2 1/2 cups of vegetables 3 cups fat-free or low-fat dairy The following are some ways to make healthier food choices and to get the recommended amounts of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and dairy.
National Craft Month National Women's History Month National Nutrition Month National Kidney Month National Athletic Training Month
Well... of those, Crafts and Nutrition are of highest interest to me so this month I will be bringing more pictures of fun craft projects as well as some nutrition tips. (And perhaps a profile of a famous woman or a new exercise you can try for athletic training... but you're on your own for kidney month!)
Whether it be a new book, a new movie or a new activity, here are some things to try out (in absolutely, completely random categories). Note that I say CURRENT because these are the things I keep coming back to right now. There's a big difference between CURRENT and ALL-TIME (though scrapbook and the Harry Potter book probably fall under all-time as well).
Activity: Scrapbooking My new favorite activity is taking all my pictures and putting them together into fun artsy projects. Makes them much more fun to look at and really narrows down the pictures. I did one last summer of all the pictures taken of one of my classes last year, and currently I'm working on 1.) a summertime scrapbook of all the summer adventures and 2.) a 2007 Year-End Scrapbook of all the events from September-December. Then I will keep going with these. They're time consuming though so don't be shocked if I go months after the event before documenting. It's a learned art, so I think I'm getting there. Here are two page samples:
Soups: Amy's Organic bean-based soups. I like the minestrone, the lentil, etc. (And for the vegetarian members of the family - there's no meat anywhere in the soups; it's an all-vegetarian company.) This has been an easy way to take lunches to work. (And for the record, I don't like the tomato - I think it's like eating tomato sauce.)
Potential Travel Destination: Greece! Never been, REALLY want to!
Book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling I know this has been out for six months already, but it's honestly the last book I read straight through without skimming
TV: The Office I haven't liked a sitcom this much since Friends was on the air! My favorite character by far is Jim, but all the characters are funny and I can't pinpoint which aspect of the show I like the best! Here's just a small part of the interaction between Dwight and Jim:
Movie: Across the Universe The basic idea is that it's a musical using all Beatles music - and how much of them you recognize depends on how well you know the Beatles, I guess (I didn't realize some of them were Beatles songs but I knew most of them!).
CD: The Music Man Soundtrack I can't help it - I'm exposed to it A LOT these days! You'd think that would make me sick of it, but it has had the opposite effect for some strange reason...
I'm thinking there should be a theme to March... but I'm stumped as to what the theme should be.
Oh... and SOMEONE'S birthday is in 11 days... I won't say who, but I think you can figure it out...
I was told at work today that the faculty-student chorus I participate in is getting famous! We've lined up a gig to sing during half-time at a WNBA game at Madison Square Garden! More details to come when they are available. The date's in May but I don't know the specifics yet.
This picture of Kara at about age 7 1/2 comes from the Roberts Family 1995 trip to the Outer Banks (we should go back - hint, hint to family members reading this)! I love the way the waves look around her!
I just sent my application in to the Folger Shakespeare Library for their 2008 Teaching Shakespeare Institute. I would have to spend four weeks in Washington D.C. Though it's been ten years since my last experience trying to go away to a "camplike" program, it still scares me! But I know it'll be really cool, and I'd probably always regret not going, so... the application is in! I'll find out April 1 if I'm accepted or not. If I am, then I guess it's off to D.C. for four weeks and if I'm not... well then... there must be some sort of job I can do somewhere to make myself useful (and save money for traveling!).
This week it's Romeo and Juliet, something I know everyone has heard of, knows the story of and has probably seen the movie version of, but not everyone can say that they've actually read it. Give it a go to appreciate the beauty of the language!
It's snowing today! Seriously, no matter how old you get, snow makes you a child again!
Lindsay and I went out to shovel our walk and Willa's walk and couldn't resist making a little snowman and playing in the snow a little bit!
Lindsay and the snowman.
Me and the snowman.
The shed after Lindsay and I threw snow at it numerous times. We agreed this is what the shed would likely look like if we kept giant birds in our yard. I suggested more like if we kept pterodactyls.
Now it's just kind of raining so the snow is either going to ice over or melt, which is disappointing, but it should be gone by Monday for the return to work, which is only good because of how annoying it is to actually drive in the snow.
This picture of Aunt Peggy and Mom was taken at Grammy's Russell's 100th Birthday Celebration in 2004. If you look closely, you'll see a third person sneaking into the picture...
"A gun rack? A gun rack? Pshaw! I don't even own A gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I going to do with a gun rack?"
(And the "pshaw" is how I've decided to spell the sound the character makes there.)
