Look what happens...

...when I put my mind to something! Anything is possible, even clearing out the disgusting weeds and dirt and all other manner of debris that used to litter my little side yard! It didn't even take a lot of time - just and hour and my determination to do it!

More Movie Nostalgia

Lindsay and I were discussing the Gnome Mobile this morning, one of our childhood favorites with Jordan, Kara and Emily. The first time we saw it was up at dad's house in Cutchogue - we had Jordan with us for the weekend, and we loved it immediately. Lindsay mentioned today how she had completely believed in the existence of gnomes after this movie, because it just looked SO REAL. Not in comparison to today's graphics standards, I'm afraid! However, this should NEVER be remade, because if it had today's graphics, most of it's charm would be completely lost!

This was always my favorite scene - when all the lady gnomes chase Jasper!

Quote of the Day

This is one of those many instances in which someone said something and it was mistaken for something else. On a recent trip to the very crowded mall, we drove around the parking lost looking for a spot to leave the car. We got to a strange area where the spots looked different, so I checking with everyone in the car (Lindsay, Kara and Emily) saying, "These are spots, aren't they?"

However, because there were a lot of spots in that particular area, Kara thought I said, "These are spots aplenty!" It has been one of our favorite quotes every since.

Happy Birthday, Pam!

It's a busy time of year for birthdays in the family, and today is no exception. Today we celebrate with Pam!

No Life Without Wife

Kara, Emily and I love this movie (and Lindsay likes it, but I don't think as much!). This is our favorite scene... one day, we WILL reenact it.

Picture of the Week

I can't believe I almost forgot to post this! I've had a really busy week, apparantly!

This famous family picture was taken during a trip to Kevin and Lori's house. We filmed one of our famous musicals in the basement, using bags of old clothes. Kara and Emily located these teal pants that apparantly my dad gave to Jordan and which Jordan used to wear in the snow (this was confirmed the next day when we were watching home movies). Anyway, as we were cleaning up all the clothes, I thought I heard Kara say something like, "Let's make a fat man dummy and leave it on Jordan's bed." When I mentioned it, everyone liked the idea and we proceeded to create this new person on Jordan's bed.

When Jordan came home with his girlfriend at the time, they headed into his room while we waited for the reaction. We later heard that Suzy had jumped at the sight of it, and Jordan admitted that he had thought it was his dad, as the shirt we used was Kevin's "lawn mowing shirt."

Happy Birthday, Cindy!

Today Cindy celebrates her birthday!

Gearing up for another fun party...

We just got our invitation to Emily's Sweet 16 party - to be held October 27th! Got my dress picked out (but alas, no shoes yet) and am ready to race Kara down the hotel hallway again on our quest for snacks! It's going to be a blast!

You Gotta Believe

Just for fun - another blast from the crazy childhood of the cousins: Ghostwriter. What can I say? The lyrics say it all (particulary "Boom-Shacka-Lacka-Boom" by the amazing Sheldon Turnipseed, who played Jamal).

Fun fact: my friend Michelle went to high school with the Ghostwriter cast. That was amazing to find out!

Pam's New Kitchen!

This has been a big topic for a while, but we've never gotten around to posting the pictures. Anyway, here are some photos of Pam and Chris' fabulous new kitchen, finished at the end of the summer!

An Important Message for all...

Well of course now I'm on a kick of finding Follow that Bird clips on youtube. If I recall, Lindsay enjoys this part of the movie, which we missed in last night's viewing.

I enjoy the gusto with which they are singing (and Big Bird's affirmations - "That's right!," "Uh-huh!", and "Sing It!" towards the end of the song are pretty entertaining).

We'll Laugh Our Cares Away!

Last night, Katherine, Joe and I were flipping the channels looking for something to watch after discovering nothing good on the HDTV channels. Finally, we took a look at the movie channels, where one was labeled "Sesame Street." Joe put it on and we all got excited right away, for we all immediately recognized the movie as Follow that Bird, a childhood favorite! So, of course we had to watch it because it just so happened to be our favorite part.

I found a video of said favorite part - when Big Bird stops on the farm and meets Ruthie and Floyd and helps out with the chores, and they all sing "Easy Goin'" - it took me back to the days when we would play Follow that Bird and I would play Ruthie, Joe would play Floyd and that left Lindsay to play - you guessed it! - Big Bird!

We spent the rest of the evening quoting the rest of the movie as it continued. The best part was Pam and Mom in the dining room/kitchen, singing all the words, remembering everything from when we used to watch it - including the key change at the end of "Easy Goin'"!

P.S. I mentioned the Sesame Street quiz I took a while back to Joe and how I ended up as Bert - he wanted to take it so I shared the link, and he's Bert too! Apparantly we are just not a cool bunch. (Though when Emily took the quiz a couple weeks ago, she was Big Bird.)

Recipe: Grandma's Cranberry Apricot Chutney

Had a moment of panic that I lost this recipe this morning, but it was just hiding behind some other things on the fridge. Thought I'd post it up just in case I ever do misplace it!

This goes really well on bread with a little cream cheese (makes an excellent tea sandwich!), or as a spread for crackers, or even on pork or something (though I've never tried it that way).

You'll need:
1 1/4 cups of sugar
1/2 cup water
1 bag cranberries
3/4 cup snipped dried apricots
3 tbs. brown sugar
3 tbs. cider vinegar
1 tbs. minced ginger

Heat the water and sugar until the sugar melts. Bring it to a boil. Add everything else and summer until it's thickened. Cool and serve (I like it cooled, but I suppose you could try it warm as well).

Until the Real Home Movies are Online...

Enjoy this new feature of the site - little 30 second music videos of family events! This one is from Jack's 6th Birthday Party over the summer. I set it to Surfin' USA pretty much because Jack chose to don a wetsuit for the occasion as there was a lot of water-related fun!

Family Quote of the Day

The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together. ~Erma Bombeck

Photoshop Fun!

This was when Lindsay's photoshop skills were not quite what they are now!

If Only...

You would have had to have been living under a rock ten years ago if you didn't know that Kelly, Lindsay and Joe (and Katherine, by osmosis) had an obsession with the Mighty Ducks (the movies, NOT the actual hockey team). Of course, as any fan knows, there are three movies in the franchise: The Mighty Ducks, D2: The Mighty Ducks and D3: The Mighty Ducks.

Fairly recently, me, Pam, Joe, Lindsay and her friend Audrey all went to Roosevelt Field to do some shopping and we're all sitting in the car - Joe in the front, Pam driving, me, Lin and Audrey in the back (Audrey was in the middle I believe). Anyway, at one point Audrey made a comment along the lines of, "I don't know, I think it was D4 or something."

Me, Joe and LIndsay all immediately turned to her and said, "WHAT?!" in unison, so shocked that there might be a D4 that we had never heard of ourselves. As it turned out, it was just a misunderstanding, but it was pretty funny.

Recently, we found this though! (Just think... maybe one day there will be a D4.)

No Rats Included

This comes from the 2005-2006 edition of "Secrets from the Kitchen." Potentially part of a book of food writing (a memoir of sorts).

When my cousins and I get together, it is always a grand affiar. We see each other a lot, and every time we get together we pick up just where we left off the last time we saw each other. We love to make crazy home movies in which we create our own television shows or funny movies. For the longest time, we filmed an advertisement video for a horrible camp called Camp Hymelick, where they fed the campers onion soup and slices of Ched-O-Bit cheese everyday.

One of the other things we like to do together is cook. Whenever we get into the kitchen we always create something - whether it be a great new food or a horrible mess that we leave behind for someone else to clearn up. We have attempted to make all kinds of things, from pizza to fondue. Most of our creations involve cheese in mass amounts, which we eat without a care in the world and regret it later when we're all sick to our stomachs from too much cheese.

Another one of the the things we specialize in is dessert. For the most part, I make the dough and my cousins and sister help me cook by eating it as I am going along. Still, this balance works and we soon find that we have a niec batch of cookies to enjoy. A few summers ago (the night we made pizza with tons of cheese), I decided to try an easy looking recupe that I happened to have all the ingredients for. It was for Lime Cookies, and they quickly became one of my cousin Kara's favorites.

When Kara was visiting me last year [note: this was written in 2005, so by "last year" I mean 2004], she beged me to make her the lime cookies. So around eight o'clock that night we had to go to the supermarket to pick up the ingredients. When we got home, we set to work. However, the lime cookie dough needs to be refrigerated for one hour before the cookies can be baked. Neither of us wanted to wait that long to enjoy something sweet. I suggested that we make my grandmother's macaroons while we waited for the dough to cool, since they were quick and easy to do. Kara agreed.

We assembled all the ingredients in a big bowl and prepared to add the flour when I spotted a container of cocoa powder in the cabinet. Knowin you could replace flour with cocoa powder in a cake, I figured the same thing would be true in the macaroons. Feeling adventurous, we decided to give it a try. The result: an improvement to an already wonderful recipe.

When we got the end of the batter, we decided (as we often do) to make one giant cookie. We shaped the dough into an oval and placed it into the oven to cook. When it was ready, we left it on the counter to cool and enjoyed the smaller cookies that were already finished. Eventually we were able to cook the lime cookies as well and we forgot about the giant cookie in the kitchen.

When my mother came home that evening, she walked into the kitchen and gasped. My cousin and I looked up from where we were sitting to see what had scared her. It turns out that she had looked at the giant chocolate-and-coconut cookie mound on the counter and thought it was a giant rat! From that day on, Kara and I renamed our created "Rat Cookies.'

Try them and see if you like them as much as Kara and I do. And I promise - there are no rats included.

Rat Cookies

A.K.A. Chocolate Coconut Macaroon

Ingredients
2 large egg whites
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups coconut
2 tbs. unsweetened cocoa poweder

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix the egg whites until soft peaks form.
3. Add the sugar and mix well.
4. Add the vanilla and cocoa powder and mix until glossy and stiff.
5. Stir in the coconut.
6. Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes.
7. Line baking sheets with aluminum foil.
8. Place the macaroons on the foil, keeping them two inches apart.
9. Bake until the tops are browned, about 13 minutes.
10. Rest in the pan for 2 minutes.
11. Cool completely on foil on a wire rack.

If you would like to make the original version, you will need to use 2 tbs. of flour instead of the cocoa powder, and then melt 3 1/2 oz. of bittersweet chocolate. When the macaroons are cool, dip the tops in the chocolate and allow them to set. The chocolate should be hardened before the macaroons are ready to eac (but I won't tell anyone if you eat them while the chocolate is till melted!).

To Submit Family News

Though I think I keep up with the family happenings pretty well, I'm sure there are things that I miss every once in a while. Make sure you send any and all family news - even small things - to me at my email (Kelerr@hotmail.com).

Also, a reminder that you guys can be contributors to the website if you would like, and then you can help post all the extremely worth and all the asinine news there is to print about the family! Email me if you would like to do that and I'll send you the contributor invitation. You'll have to create an account with blogger, but then you'll be able to post whatever you'd like!

A Little Bit Late...

...but nonetheless worth mentioning. Recently Jordan headed down to California where he is getting his Master's in Film. Good luck!

Picture of the Week

This picture was taken on the day of Kara's high school graduation. After the - very disgustingly hot - day at the ceremony, we all went out to dinner, and decided to make hats out of our napkins!

Recipe: Grandma's Cheesecake

Here's the famous Roberts family cheesecake recipe. With it I posted the story I wrote about it for "Secrets from the Kitchen," the recipe/story project I do with my students. This is all part of the new series on the family website called "Cooking Tales."

Passing the Torch

"No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook authors."

-Laurie Colwin

When I was a little girl, I used to stand in the kitchen on one of the wrought iron chairs, pulled up to the counter so that I could see what my grandmother was cooking. I would study her movements intently, watching as each ingredient became a part of what would be the finished product. Often I would be her helper, cracking eggs or stirring a pot on the stove. It was always amazing to me hwo she could make just about anything I asked for, even if it was just shaved ice from the ancient freezer (with a small amount of soda poured on top - the original Slurpee, I suppose!).

As I got older, my love of cooking grew as I continued to learn from my grandma. Whenever I would visit her I would learn something new, from mustard chicken to chocolate mousse (my personal favorite!). Now, I love being the cook myself, the person everyone goes to when they are looking for a good meal. However, I still enjoy watching my grandma cook just as much as I enjoy making my own recipes. Though I have had years of practice with my own recipes and cookbooks, I still think that everything I know about cooking I learned from her.

In my family, my grandmother is famous for her cheesecake. The recipe was found years ago in an article. Though the magazine that published the article is long forgotten, the recipe is alive and well and inevitably makes its way to every family function that we have. For years my grandma would be the one to make it for every party or holiday gathering we had. One year, however, when my family threw a baby shower for my aunt, the cheesecake became my duty. The recipe was handed to me on an index card, and I tried it for the first time in my life. It was a success, and the torch was passed! From that day on, it has been my job to make the cheesecake.

Grandma's Cheesecake

In order to make this cheesecake, you will need:

24 oz. cream cheese (3 bars - Philadelphia works best)
5 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/4 tsp almond extract
butter, to grease the pan

First, beat the cream cheese until it is softened. Then add the eggs, sugar and almond extract into the bowl. Beat all the ingredients together until smooth, thick and lemon-colored. Pour into a buttered 9" springform cake pan. Bake the cake in a moderate oven (about 325 degrees) for 45-50 minutes, or until set (the middle should not jiggle when you give the pan a shake!).

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to sit. Don't panic when the cake collapses - it's supposed to do that! Once the cake is cooled, remove it form the pan and pour the glaze over the top (see the glaze recipe below).

Glaze

To make the cheesecake glaze, you will need"

1 4-oz. bar of German baker's chocolate
1 tbs butter
3 tbs water
1 cup confectioner's sugar
dash salt
1/2 tsp vanilla

First melt the chocolate, butter and water in a small saucepan. Once these ingredients have become a liquid, turn off the stove and add the confectioner's sugar, salt and vanilla. Stir all the ingredients together until smooth. If the sugar is too climpy and not blending well with the chocolate, you can put the pan back on the stove over low hear for a few minutes. Once the glaze is smooth, pour it over the cheesecake, allowing the glaze to drip down the sides.

You can try a variety of different things with your cheesecake. You can top it with fresh fruit or you can add chocolate chips into the batter! Experiment with it and make it your own.

Travel Tales: Los Angeles 2006, Part Four

It's been a while since our last travel tales, and I haven't finished the Los Angeles story yet. So here it goes:

Our last full day in Los Angeles (July 29, 2006) began when we headed on a complete tour of the Los Angeles area. We started off our day with a laugh, as we realized that Jordan and his friend Ian were wearing virtually matching outfits by accident - yellow shirts and greenish shorts. So we piled into the car and went to the Chinese Theater, and to see the Walk of Fame. We parked the car in a very sketchy parking lot and headed out, determined not to purchase any maps to stars homes - we didn't need to see houses behind fences, did we? (Well, turns out we did, but that's for later...)

We spent the morning at the Kodak Theater (where the Oscars are held) and then at the Chinese theater, trying out our hands in various celebrities. I discovered that my hands fit pretty well into the likes of Mary Pickford and Vivian Leigh, but were a little too wide to fit in Marilyn Monroe's handprints.

At the Chinese theater, Jordan purchased the map to the stars homes, and we still insisted that we would NOT - I repeat, WOULD NOT - use it to drive around aimlessly looking for random houses. (And again, that's a story for later...)

From the Chinese Theater, we walked a little bit on the Walk of Fame, where we found Chuck Norris' star. We also found Michael Bolton, Patrick Swayze and David Hasselhoff - all people who highly amuse us for some reason or another.

Then it was off to the Santa Monica area, where we had lunch and walked through the shopping areas. Believe it or not, this was also our first glimpse of the beach as we walked along the Santa Monica pier. The day was a little cloudy but it was still nice to see.

After this, we decided to check out Rodeo Drive - and not just by car. We drove in and parked in a lot that cost nothing for less than an hour of parking time (one of my favorite things about LA was the cheap parking all over the place - which was nice since the street parking sucked!). We walked along Rodeo Drive for a while, just checking stores full of things we could never afford. Of course, we couldn't help ourselves from quoting D2: The Mighty Ducks over and over again, pronouncing it Rodeo like the cattle show just like Ty does. None of us really wanted to mimic Goldberg's food ordering though.

Then it was off to a walk along the Clueless steps (above - Emily and KAra and me, looking like some stranger who got in their picture!), and THEN we checked the map and headed to the stars homes. We especially liked driving around the Bel-Air area, where we got to see Nicholas Cage's house (behind a fence), Leonard Nimoy's house (behind a fence), Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe's house (before the break-up and again behind a fence - are you seeing the trend here?).

Our favorite house by far was the one belonging to 90210 creator Aaron Spelling. It seemed to be at least three blocks long (as Jordan joked, "It took us like, 7 minutes to drive by it") and we were especially entertained by the tiny little property that was smashed next to it!

Then it was back to Jordan's place, where Kara, Emily and I decided we didn't really want dinner but could really go for some ice cream. So we headed back out to find a Gelato place near Rodeo Drive that Kara had noticed when we were there. However, it seemed to disappear in our absence and we couldn't find it again! A short drive found a Baskin Robbins though, and we parked in the same lot as before because Kara claimed it was free. I said it wasn't because the sign said that after 6:00 p.m. you had to pay $2.00 to park there - but still a fair price, we all thought. However, when we got out of the car, Kara found $2.00 on the ground! "See, I told you it was free!" she said, and we in fact used those dollars to pay for the parking when we left.

On our way back, we stopped at the cookie store (the name escapes me) and decided to purchase a dozen cookies for Jordan and his roomates to thank them for their hospitality, and we also picked up a fantastic card at a Duane Reade by the Baskin Robbins. And if memory serves, we stopped at the supermarket to replace all the bread and peanut butter and water we kept eating!

The cookie bag - Kara drew the guys on it.

The outside of the card.

The inside of the card.

That night, Jordan contributed a fabulous White Castle frozen cheeseburger wrapper for our trip scrapbook and everyone was entertained by Jordan's roomate Jim singing along to "Sugar We're Going Down" (or whatever that song's called - this is what Kara calls it in the scrapbook) and doing a fantastic dance.

Sadly that was our last night in Los Angeles. The next day we had to leave pretty early to return the car, and we wanted to stop for cookies. Kara purchased us one drozen cookies for the airport and plane ride home, and then we went to gas up the car, where I spilled gas on my foot (it was SO gross!). We got to the airport and made a few final purchases before getting on the plane and headed home.

Note: The raisins we got on the plane were the most disgusting things any of us had ever had. I think they went beyond raisin - they were that dried up!

Where will our adventures take us next? Only time will tell...

Photo Gallery Updated

Head on over to the photo gallery and you can now see some pictures from Katherine's recent trip to France with Jeanne and Anthony. The picture up are from Cannes, Monaco and Monte Carlo. Paris is coming soon - and we'll try to get some of the videos up as well!

Seriously? BERT?!

Out of boredom I took this quiz today to find my Sesame Street personality.

You Are Bert

Extremely serious and a little eccentric, people find you loveable - even if you don't love them!

You are usually feeling: Logical - you rarely let your emotions rule you

You are famous for: Being smart, a total neat freak, and maybe just a little evil

How you life your life: With passion, even if your odd passions (like bottle caps and pigeons) are baffling to others

A Stroke of Genius!

Last night, I had a stroke of genius!

Since I moved into my apartment a year and a half ago, I've had a real problem with storage (a move on my part to remove two of the closets since they took up all the space in the bedroom - a good decision for the bedroom, but not for closet space!). Anyway, I've had shoes all over the place since then, most recently just chucked in a pile in a corner.

My other big problem is that I really don't like the pegboard doors, because the space behind them can't store anything but small bottles (if they were in the kitchen, they'd make an excellent spice cabinet). Currently I only use one of them to store small tools and things.

The peg board doors.

Anyway, last night I was on an organizing kick and I had cleared a space in my bedroom for the shoes to go neatly (quickly seeing that they wouldn't all fit), and then trying to fix the door of a cabinet. So I went to the peg board cabinet and took out a screwdriver - and that's when it hit me!

The cabinets are PERFECT for shoe storage!!

Blast from the Not-So-Long-Ago-Past

Back in 1996, I went to stay with Jordan, Kara and Emily for a couple days (which really isn't something strange - I stay there all the time!). This time, however, we made a fantastic discovery! While looking for something to watch, we came across Telemundo, which was showing a new soap opera. We were immediately entertained by the fact that it seemed to be set in colonial times, and dubbed in Spanish from a DIFFERENT Spanish dialect (the words did not always sync with the characters' voices). We started to dub it over with English, making up our own plot lines and whatnot, most of which had to do with fans and a guy that ran the Bargain Basement where they were sold. It, of course, made absolutely no sense whatsoever, but did the trick to entertain us every night at 10 p.m. while I was there!

Anyway, today I got an email from Emily (who will soon be a new contributor to the fabulous family website world), and she told me that she and Kara had recently been watching a tape I had given them of Camp Hymelick music videos. Apparantly I had not used a blank tape and there was an episode of Dawson's Creek on after the music videos. They watched it, and then suddenly something from the Spanish channel came on! They saw that it was Xica! Emily's email really brought back some fun memories of that, so I immediately headed to youtube to see what I could find. They, of course, had some stuff.

Unless I am very much mistaken, we actually saw this scene in the very first episode we watched. I remember because we REALLY liked the character in the pink - Jose Maria (that was his name on the show, not one we made up!). I can't for the life of me remember what we dubbed it with, but I would assume we made reference to the fanning, and clearly they were having some sort of argument.

I'll have to hunt down some more scenes to see if I recognize them. Hopefully I can find the one with "the plan" (which will be explained much more when I find it)!

Picture of the Week

Joe, Pam and I are looking amazing, aren't we?

This picture was taken in August 1993, when we all headed down to Disney World for a week or so. This was the morning that me, mom, Pam and Joe went to the Magic Kingdom an hour before it opened, leaving a sleeping Chris, Katherine and Lindsay behind. We spent a few hours there alone, trying on hats (apparantly) and going on rides without heinous lines. We were amazed just a few hours later to actually FIND Lindsay, Katherine and Chris in the crowd!

I must say: we did know how to dress back in '93, didn't we? And the fanny packs?? That's a look that should NEVER have gone out of style. They're fashionable AND convenient for carrying your most needed items (keys, wallet, etc). Perhaps one day it'll be cool to wear the fanny pack again...

Labor Day Weekend

Here are some of the highlights of my recent visit to see Kate (who isn't family but might as well be!) and her mom at their house in Callicoon (let's just say we had a little too much fun with the camera feature on my work computer!):

Me and Kate, looking attractive as ever.

Hats are amazing.

Vicky, Kate's mom (on the far right) with her friends Inger and Doug.

A picture I took on the porch - I just like it!

Monday the family was at Pam's for a Labor Day dinner - and we saw all of Katherine's fabulous photos from France, which will be up here soon... along with the videos!
